DiMarzio X2N DP102

Note that the X2N is not available as a trembucker/f-spaced model; it is only available in one width which works for all 6-string guitars.

From the manufacturer:

The X2N® is a “take-no-prisoners, in-your-face” humbucker. Twin, wide-bar pole pieces give the X2N® a nasty, dangerous look — and rightly so. Our highest gain pickup was created to push tube amps into total overdrive. Put one in the bridge position for a powerful jolt to the voltage the amp sees from your guitar. The result is a sound that can only be described as blistering. The magnetic field of the X2N® is very powerful and focused. It captures the character of whichever guitar it’s in. If your guitar is warm sounding, the X2N® will act like a sledgehammer. A bright-sounding guitar will go into total scream mode. And the X2N® still has versatility: single-coil and series-parallel modes are particularly effective, because the X2N® pickup’s power gives these sounds more authority than is possible with weaker humbuckers.

The X2N® works in any situation where maximum power and overdrive is required. The dual blade pole pieces create a very even, balanced sound. The X2N® works best in combination with higher-output pickups. It can also combine well with the Fast Track 1™, The Chopper™, and Pro Track™. The split option is very effective, because a single X2N® coil has similar performance parameters to many Strat®-type pickups.

Seth's picks for best videos/sound clips:

Here's one from Dennis Kayzer, and it features the DiMarzio X2N DP102 as the lone pickup in his Custom Shop Jackson Soloist, and he's playing it through his Fractal Audio Axe Fx II Modeling Amplifier. It's interesting, because he plays through several high gain amp models. He starts the Djent-y goodness at 0:06, using the Axe Fx II's "Mesa Red" patch. At 0:47, he switches to the "FAS Modern" sound, and plays some really amazing hammer-on riffs...then ups the ante a bit by playing a riff that features some really cool sounding two hand tapping. He switches to the "Peavey 5150" sound at 1:22, and here I really hear the pick attack scraping that low string. I really love the "tremolo tapping" with the edge of the pick at 1:27. This guy is a riff meister. At 2:04, He closes the video with the "Soldano SLO 100" patch, and plays some cool pinch harmonics.

This is Frédéric Puglisi playing his Ibanez PGM 301 equipped with DiMarzio X2N DP102's in both the bridge and neck positions. He begins at 0:00 playing along with a backing track that sounds vaguely like a Jeff Beck tune, and proceeds to shred his face off using the bridge pickup until about 1:00 min, when he switches to the neck pickup. There is some really nice stuff happening at about 1:40, so watch for that. From 1:54 to the end, he returns to the bridge pickup and does some pretty amazing legato playing at around 2:09. While this is a kind of "low volume" example, I feel it captures a few things well, like the clarity of the pick attack transient, and the way the X2N can be used in the neck position to achieve some nice sounds.

Here's a pretty great one that features the DiMarzio X2N DP102 in the bridge position of a cheap '80s guitar. You can pretty much scroll to anywhere in the timeline to get a good idea of how this pickup sounds. Lots of sustain and crazy harmonics. This pickup seems especially well suited for this type of music, pinch harmonics chirp nicely (which he makes LOTS of use out of). Give it a listen. Makes this lower cost guitar sound like a fire breather!

In contrast to the riff-laden demos of the DiMarzio X2N, this one is all about some high register single-note soloing. He has the X2N in his super custom Jackson DK2, and he seems to be plugged into a Line6 POD 2.0. Listen for the clarity of the attack, and the way the notes really bloom and sustain after that initial transient. Nice high frequency harmonic content without being too piercing. Nice Floyd Rose dips here too.

This one is another good illustration of how well the DiMarzio X2N DP102 responds in the bridge position in a heavy music application. This guy has installed the X2N in his Ibanez Iceman ICX220DX, and is plugged into his Randall RX120RH half stack. The riffage starts at 0:14, and that's pretty much what happens until the end of the video. he goes through some really nice stuff though, especially the triplets at 1:09. The mug for the camera at the end is pretty great too. Again, we hear the loudness and tight pick attack of the X2N in this example. Brutal indeed.

This one is another one with the age old combination of the Ibanez guitar with the DiMarzio X2N DP102 in the bridge. In this case, it's an Ibanez RG270 being played through a Line6 PODxt. The entire video is a huge collection of djent-style riffy goodness. Scroll to any point in the video to get an idea of how powerful the X2N is in this application. I hear a lot of high mids, and high mids have a tendency to be brittle or grating in other pickups, but here, I hear the way the X2N smooths out those frequencies while still allowing them to come to the front. Great playing.
